China Green Times reported on July 21 that Yunnan will approximately take 10 years to improve 60 million acres low-yield forests. It plans to improve 20 million at the end of "12 5" and almost complete until 2020. This year is the first year of launching low-yield forests improvement project. Yunnan will be the pilot province to work on 2 million acres.
Mr. Kong Chuizhu, vice governer of Yunnan province, spoke at the meeting. He said that we should further speed up the pace to quickly launch set off in the transformation of low-yield forests improvement. He stated that the improvement of low-yield forests is an important event in the economic and social development of the province. It is the priority of forestry work both for present and in the future. He said that we should further strengthen the leadership of low-yield forests improvement and establish joint management mechanism to promote the Improvement.
Per capita forest area in Yunnan Province is more than 10 acres, 6 times of average cultivated area per capita. But low-yield forest areas are 74.7 million acres. This March, Yunnan province government issued “Suggestion on Accelerating the improvement of low-yielding forest", and set up a leading group and office. As of the end of June, the province has completed the improvement of 840,000 acres of low-yielding forests.
